According to a recent bank poll, 53% of prospective buyers are open to pooling resources with family, compared to 44% overall. The reasons behind this trend are easy to understand: affordability challenges (34%), managing day-to-day costs (32%), and, for 26%, simply making homeownership possible through shared purchasing.

Having spent decades guiding Vancouver families through similar journeys, I’ve witnessed firsthand how these arrangements can offer not just financial relief but a deeper sense of connection and support. In fact, 35% of current homeowners would even consider selling their home to buy alongside an adult child—helping the next generation get their foot in the door.

The timeline for first-time buyers is shifting, too. Where current owners bought their first home at an average age of 29, today’s non-owners expect to wait until 41, and half aren’t sure when they’ll be able to buy. With these changes, careful planning is more important than ever: 74% of buyers and renewers prioritize long-term suitability, 84% value good advice, and families are reminded to put agreements in writing.

Every family’s journey is unique, and I’ve found some of my most rewarding work comes from helping multiple generations find a home that truly fits. There’s real pride in homeownership, especially when it’s shared.

It’s fascinating to see how multi-generational home buying is becoming more appealing across Canada—especially among those looking to purchase within the next two years.
